Juana's Story
I will be shipping the rosaries and prayer beads in little handmade woven drawstring bags, when they are available. These bags are made from second hand pieces of corte (a traditional Guatemalan skirt). They are made by Juana, a little elderly lady, probably in her seventies, who has
been making these and selling them at night on the streets of Panajachel, Guatemala
for many years. She walks into town every night from her home which is about
5 miles away down a rocky, dirt road that winds up and down the hillsides. Her
hearing and eyesight are failing her, so the quality may not be the best. She isn't always easy to locate,
so they may not always be available. I just feel that she still has to earn
a living and the bags are beautiful to me because of her dire situation and her beautiful smile. | |
